    1. Many of our much loved fairytales stem from the collaborative works of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm. They are familiar, homely, frightening and fantastic. With settings from the humble home, enchanted forests and grand palaces, you are sure to find a tale you will enjoy. The Oxford collection of the Grimm tales is a raw change from the 'happily ever after' of Walt Disney. While many of our familiar fairytales are included, they are shrouded with darker material. Rooted in Germanic folklore and Norse p [...]

    2. I loved reading the harsh and grisly details of traditional folklore, and watching the popular motifs appear time and again was fun. Until, I suddenly realized I've read one too many. Then I had to stop. No more. No more envious step mothers, no more parents who readily give their children to strangers or leave them to die a slow lonely death in the woods because food is scarce. No more beautiful young princesses who offer themselves up in marriage to anyone who can solve their problem, only to [...]

    3. Worth a read for the bizarre factor alone: especially for the tale about the boy born half human half hedgehog. No idea what the results of Freudian literary analysis would be though!

    4. T'was a great read. It brought plenty of childhood memories of storytelling and Disney films back. It was interesting to see the varying versions of the stories that were adapted into films. I hope 'The Walt Disney Company' or perhaps 'Dreamworks' (maybe even Pixar) decides to adapt more of Grimm's tales into films! Basically I'd like to see these stories adapted and brought to life on the big screen. I didn't get the Scots dialect stories mainly because I wasn't really bothered to actually tran [...]

    5. A collection of fairy tales written by the Brothers Grimm, all ending with a happy end for the hero in one way or another. It did not disappoint in the line of being a bit twisted, portraying a darker side to the fairy tales I had grown up with, such as the tales of Snow White, Cinderella (or Ashenputtel), Rapunzel and the very end of Rumplestiltskin. Most stories only had a few dark moments, but one of them in particular, 'Faithful John', was slightly distubing, particularly towarss the end, an [...]

    6. It has been a very interesting voyage for me since my childhood, and the Disney version of such familiar tales. Here are the more scholarly, more engaging editions of a good selection of the stories collected by the Grimm Brothers. I can see where Terry Gilliam gets a lot of his strange visuals, not just for the Brothers Grimm, but also the first of Baron Munchausen's tall tales with the Six Who Went Far in the World. Will and Jake were definitely off in their own world, populated by wicked but [...]

    7. The Grimm Brothers collected around two hundred stories, and this selection includes about seventy of them. The classics are here--Snow White, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty. There are half a dozen different versions of the Cinderella story, supplying the reader with a useful occasion to compare some of the forms the story has taken. The notes at the back of the book are helpful, cross-referencing stories with one another according to the motifs employed. The editor of this edition in [...]

    8. There's no faulting the tales themselves - how can you fault an oral tradition, and what would that say about cultural relativism? - but to say that there are repetitions amongst them, and clumsiness of narrative, is to highlight only the nature of the sources. To have written these down was visionary, and to have them available now is a joy. I mark this down one star from a full and fathomable five, as there are awkwardnesses in translation that jar. Aside from that, Grimm is essential reading, [...]

    9. A good first introduction to the methods and ideas of how the Brothers Grimm collected folktales. I would have much preferred the tales told in dialects to have been just translated into English, but i do understand that the translator was trying to achieve the effect from the original German in doing so.

    10. My first reading of the original versions of classic Disney tales. A lot more violent than the Disney versions, but not as violent as I was expecting. They used "slut" a lot more than I was expecting, though.

    11. The original (and in my opinion, best) versions of popular fairy tales. I particularly love Rapunzel and Rumplestiltskin.

    12. The Grimm brothers seem to have a perverse fascination with torture. Despite that fact, I still enjoyed the book.

    13. It was my first time reading a few of these in their true form; I'm a big Disney fan, but I actually found these a lot more fun. Gothic, frightening and delightfully morbid.
