in the best order Later, the vowel r sound is discussed in detail and credit is given for different pronunciations. This book is not for kids, for sure It is too technical and difficult I can see teachers using it to set up lessons for students An example might be with ey in what words does it say long a, and in which does it say long e Or maybe Which Looks Right with the long i sound cry or crie But there are much better resources for that many found for free online. The long vowels are first, and I didn t have a problem with them Then the short vowels That is opposite the way teachers teach them And that s when I began questioning the whole book The exercisesI don t really understand them maybe this is for foreigners trying to learn to spell English I don t think it s for children Maybe teachers Who is the audience For example at 40%, one of the exercises asks how to spell bike with bbike being a possible answer you have to know nothing about English to choose that answer, yet the book is written in English, so you have to have a basic understanding of spelling to read it I think a better approach is teaching the 6 syllable types Many of these obscure rules can be easily found using those 6 rules instead of the 200 in this book The soft uh sound is called a schwa it has a name, use it In the part that I read, it didn t even mention that the schwa is in unstressed syllables That alone would make it easier to understand. At 38%, a question asks what rhymes doesn t rhyme with sir The use of the word rhyme was incorrect based on the quiz answers girl, were, turn Then words that don t rhyme with sir didn t have any correct answers I can t get past Part 1 I don t recommend this book to anyone Just teach the syllable rules already Labor intensive and too many rules to remember there are easier ways Too many mistakes The author must have been really bored to sit around and come up with these examples Update OK, I decided to give it a second shot Now I m at 44% in an Exercise Question 5 She has a strong ____ that good things will happen Choices for the f sound belief belieff belieph belieghI don t get it you have to be able to read English well enough to comprehend all the rules, but then you might think those last two choices are possible OK, I m seriously done now flag 1 likeLike see review Jul 07, 2018 Kelly Knapp rated it really liked it Great child going to school and being in the first grade can be a quite challenging experience especially where the three R s of reading, writing, and arithmetic are concerned And being a child of the 1950 s living in New York City I should know, for the fright one has when the teacher as a spelling test for her students to take might be insurmountable if not embarrassing While speaking English is relatively easy, and reading a bit daunting, it is spelling which can spell the downfall of any student. The strange thing English is not the only language where these variances of the language can be found I experienced the same kind of sensations when I took German as my required foreign language, my conversational German was EXCELLENT, my reading quite decent, but my writing can be best described as being horrendous. What the author, Jenny Pearson, has done in this book is to take the various components of spoken English and then take them one by one to tell her readers how it relates to the spelling of words The book itself, is one which allows its readers to work at their own pace Starting off with the various vowels and vowel groupings readers are then introduced not only to the consonants, but to the various groupings of them Spelling is not as clean cut as it might seem, for sometimes the mere sound of words aren t enough to spell them correctly, you need to be able to discern what the meaning is, which is what happens in the case with homophones homonyms The informational content of this supplemented by providing neither exercises to test one s knowledge by themselves or with the aid of someone else, or specific information for some spelling demons.Since becoming an author, blogger and book reviewer I ve found my own spelling has greatly improved since I began, I can see the benefits this book can provide all of its readers, especially for those for whom English is a second language ESL , which is why Ms Pearson has gotten the 5 STARS I m giving her
