Fathers, inspired by the tragic death of a young woman in Charlottesville in 2017, is a hard hitting, raw and honest exploration of white supremacy, cultural and racial conflict and the human beings fighting on every frontier justly or not set in America not in world of the author s imagining Not once does Gagnier pretend to be anything other than a Canadian, white man but I believe he does justice, through empathy, understanding and research, to all of his characters Whether it be Peter York, a white, American man or Nadia, a teenager and refugee from war torn Syria Gagnier tells a story which unveils the truths and lies which commingle to create the fabric of current, Western societies He does this expertly leaving you questioning the world around you flag 2 likesLike see story Founding Fathers is an experience, and it demands conversation and action for within the pages is a mirror pointed squarely on our society Founding Fathers gets my highest recommendation flag 1 there are people who want to be writers and then there s the rare soul who is a writer whether they want to be or not, it s just woven in their DNA Nicolas Gagnier s work and ethos fits into the latter category because whether he wanted to be or not, he was destined to write It s who he is I envy his ability but I know it comes at a steep price, because whilst he can produce an extremely worthy story extremely rapidly, he ll then collapse from the sheer effort and sleepless nights it took to bring it to fruition Only someone whose very substance and heartbeat is that of a writer could continue to do this, and keep bringing out these incredible stories that grab you by the throat and refuse to let go That is exactly how all of Gagnier s work reads, compelling, intense, frighteningly believable and immediate In a way you could compare his style to that of a drug, you get your fix and then you are left wanting It is the sheer passion and craft of his ability as a writer that forces you into his worlds and makes them so plausible His characterization and character development is out of this world, he has such an uncanny way of bringing to life a wide variety of people and writing women as well as a female would I can only take my hat off to a writer of this caliber and creed Gagnier is a fierce voice in this flat world, his stories demand to be read and appreciated for the subjects they tackle, which are NEVER safe and NEVER easy and always leave you thinking and thinking and thinking Gagnier in this sense is a real voice of our generation, he provokes you into considering the disquieting truth of how our lives really are No so than this latest creation, Founding Fathers Gagnier took on a very unsafe subject and pushed the envelope as far as it would go He did this because that s what he does, he instinctively knows what needs to be talked about and examined at a profound level, what we cannot leave unsaid but so often do Gagnier s novels examine those subjects others would shy away from, and in so doing, become the truth we seek Founding Fathers is perhaps his greatest example of this truth telling thus far, and you will not be disappointed instead, you will be enraged and you will be provoked and you will want things to change I read this novel in one sitting and you ll soon see why Outstanding talent flag 1 likeLike see review View 1
