    4. This really does feel like collection of short stories.Sure, it is a full book, but the differing chapters often do not feel connected apart from the same characters being in it. But nonetheless, the novel is well written and by the time I read it, it was quite some time since I had one. Also, was it such a good idea to list the principal characters before even book one starts? Because some of them took a while to appear. So, would I recommend this book? Yes, it is pretty interesting to say the le [...]

    7. I remember loving this book when I read it, and I still really want to get my hands on a copy. There is a movie or a drama based on it, which I also want to see. The characters felt real, and their stories were heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. I really felt for all of them, and hoped that in the end they found happiness.

    10. “When I went to bed I thought of my own father. I recalled the time he’d pinned his Order of the Precious Tripod on my lapel, so seriously, so grandly. He probably thought I looked a lot like him, too. Too bad he had to go and pin all his hopes on someone like me. [] No, I think I knew how much Father had suffered. In the months since I’d left home, my knowledge of the terrible agony he was enduring pressed down more and more heavily on my heart. That unbearable agony was probably what I w [...]

    11. Nostalgia for a time before one was born isn't unique, but to love Taipei in the 50s and 60s is to take in the poverty and the complex history of the land's multiple occupiers, to take in its orphans and prostitutes, and still love the city because you recognize the same kindness, optimism, and strength in its people from these old stories.Published in 1983, 孽子 (unfortunately titled "Crystal Boys" in its English edition) is a story about the gay scene around a lotus pond in a Taipei park beg [...]

    15. 4.5 This one will be hard to forget. Effortless but charged writing, full of wonderful and heartbreaking imagery. I felt like I was transported to the hot streets of 70s Taiwan and stranded in the dirty alleyways of shops and restaurants, where shadows and loneliness reign supreme. I think Pai's biggest strength is the exploration of human relations (especially familial) and how much they shape us and how much they destroy us.

    17. I've read this impressive book for the autumn challenge 2013 of the Netherlands & Flanders group. For a review in Dutch, see /topic/show/
